I found this pattern in the Encyclopaedia of Knitting and Crochet for Techniques by Luise Roberts. It’s a reversible stitch pattern using just knit and purl stitches – might work well for a scarf in chunky wool.
The stitch pattern repeats over 6 stitches and 10 rows.
Rows 1 and 2: K3, P3
Row 3: K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1
Rows 4 and 5: K3, P3
Rows 6 and 7: P3, K3
Row 8: P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1
Rows 9 and 10: P3, K3
Here’s the reverse side (very similar, yes?):
And here’s a picture of a bigger sample from the book:
After Laura’s comment, I knitted another stitch sample following the instructions to check that there isn’t a mistake. It looks to be OK.

I just wanted to let you know that I tried this stitch several times and it did not come out like the picture. I followed the instructions to a “T” and tried it over and over again but it looks like a regular basket stitch. Could you please tell me what I may or may not be doing wrong? I really love this stitch but can’t seem to get it to come out like yours. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Laura Keeble
Hi Laura
I’m sorry that this is a such a ridiculously late reply. Until recently life didn’t seem to have the space in it needed for a blog. I’m guessing that you’ve long since lost interest but I checked the instructions and knitted up another sample. I’ve attached pictures of it to the bottom of the post (it’s the version in grey wool). It seems to come out the same as the first sample so I don’t think there’s a mistake. So I don’t know where yours was going wrong I’m afraid. I hope that you managed to find a suitable alternative in the meantime.
All the best,
Steph
